From: Jessica Horne, IAI Outreach Coordinator Lynn Gefsky, IAI Community Relations Coordinator Stephanie Hausner, IAI Campus and Programs Coordinator Re: Action Alert and Talking Points on Situation in Southern Israel and Gaza Strip Action: Urge your Congressmen to co-sponsor/vote YES on H.Res. 951 condemning rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip to Israeli towns. BACKGROUND On February 27, 2008 the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a resolution (H.Res. 951) that condemns the continuing Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza and supports Israel's right to defend its citizens. The resolution, introduced by Reps. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) and Shelley Berkley (D-NV), places responsibility for the ongoing violence on Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The resolution is expected to be brought to the House floor for a vote as early as this week. The text of the resolution alludes to the more than 4,000 rockets and mortar shells that have been fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip by Hamas and other terrorist organizations since Israeli forces withdrew from there in 2005. There has been almost daily rocket fire from Gaza that has targeted civilian neighborhoods in Sderot and Ashkelon. The resolution also mentions the important connection between the governments of Iran and Syria and Hamas and other terrorist organizations. ACTION NEEDED Please call House members and urge them to cosponsor and support H. Res. 951. House members can be reached through the Capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121.
